Planning Your Play Area

STEP 5 - Choosing Your Surface

The surface around playground equipment is a critical aspect of play environment design, directly affecting safety, accessibility, cost, and usability. Since safety is our first concern, we recommend only those surface materials that have proven track records – not just at the time of installation, but over several years and in varying conditions. All our manufactured surfaces are tested to meet ASTM F1292 standards for resilience. Many surfaces we offer meet ADA requirements, allowing wheelchairs to roam freely on them.

KidFlexTM

Poured in place rubber affords low maintenance surfacing with the capability to add graphics such as logos, shapes, and figures. Along with tiles, poured in place rubber provides the best wheelchair access among the various options.

Wood Fiber

Engineered Wood Fiber (EWF) is the most economical ADA compliant surfacing material on the market, at least in initial cost. GF Play obtains EWF from local sources, so the actual content will vary based on the particular timber available in an area. GF Play recommends and provides superior drainage bases for EWF use zones to protect your investment as well as the children who play on them.

Artificial Turf

  • Natural look and feel – children love the texture!
  • Proven durability – 8-year limited warranty (compared to two years with most poured in place rubber surfaces!)
  • Minimal annual maintenance
  • Critical Fall Heights are achieved with additional padding under the artificial turf

KinderLawnTM

Artificial grass with rubber granule infill. Our most price-competitive option. Works great as a grass replacement.

KinderFallTM

Artificial grass use zone with infill, for critical heights up to 10’. Recommended for use over aggregate base only.

KinderPlayTM

Our premium non-infill turf product, for critical heights up to 9.5’. Produced with highly durable nylon yarn, KinderPlayTM uses an exclusive tufting system that requires NO infill material.

Worried About Germs?

Worried about germs and the surfaces your children play on? Now you can protect them from the spread of germs! By introducing AlphaSan® antimicrobial technology directly into the grass fibers, KinderLawn, KinderFall, and KinderPlay artificial turf provide long-lasting protection against microbes and germs. AlphaSan is safe for contact with children, yet attacks the growth of bacteria, and inhibits a wide range of microorganisms. Be sure you ask for our optional AlphaSan protection when you discuss your surfacing needs with your GF Play Design Consultant.

Borders

Grounds For Play provides two types of borders: wood timbers with optional trex cap, or roto-molded plastic timbers. All our manufactured surfaces are tested to meet ASTM F1292 standards for resilience. Many surfaces we offer meet ADA requirements, allowing wheelchairs to roam freely on them.
